Age: 20

Barton currently volunteers for Red Frogs Chaplaincy - an organisation that supports the safety of young people at Schoolies Week and at Universities by providing study breaks and hydration stations during social events and party scenes. His leadership through his volunteering is also recognised with this volunteer commitments with the Lighthouse Church in Wollongong. 

"My aim in participating in Illawarra's Best Catch is not to highlight my own achievements but to support a great cause that is raising  awareness for the need of young male volunteers in the Illawarra"


Chris Gibbs

Chris Gibbs

Home Town: Balgownie

Age: 22

Chris is heavily involved as a volunteer disability support worker at House With No Steps in Wollongong where these day care programs are vital to increasing the quality of life for people with a disability. Chris is also passionate about volunteering through his workplace, Bunnings Warehouse in North Wollongong, providing support by lending a helping hand to the numerous volunteer and charity organisations seeking assistance in their fundraising and community events.

"I hope my involvement in Illawarra's Best Catch will increase awareness and the promotion of existing volunteering opportunities among young men in the Illawarra. I'm passionate about supporting people in the Illawarra achieve their full potential"


Jean-Luc Ngoy

Jean-Luc Ngoy

Home Town: Figtree

Age: 20

Jean-Luc volunteers as a peer educator and mentor, advising local high school students on ways to pursue their goals and dreams. His passion for music has lead him to perform as a singer across NSW at community events including Refugee Week, Harmony Day and Aboriginal focused events. He also continues to be a sought-out speaker at Multicultural Youth Conferences, highlighting issues that affect young people from a culturally diverse background.

"I am pleased to be part of Illawarra's Best Catch so that I can use my passion for music and performing to motivate and empower young men like me to give back to our community"


Matthew Dawson

Matthew Dawson

Home Town: Wollongong

Age: 23

Matthew is currently President of the Civil Engineering Society at University of Wollongong which sees him undertake extensive community work including mentoring and tutoring of first year students, fundraising for a variety of charities including the Cancer Council and Engineers Without Borders and is currently in the process of organising a community building project in Vanuatu in association with Habitat for Humanity. He is an active member of the Unicentre Unicrew team as well as holding a range of volunteer executive positions held through the University of Wollongong Clubs and Societies Unit. He is the current captain and coach of two local Futsal teams and the University’s Handball team heading to Australian Championships in Perth.

"I feel that volunteering begins at home helping those we spend our day to day lives with and doing our part to make their lives better. I hope I can help to communicate to young men that volunteering doesn’t have to be hard work nor does it have to be earth shattering, every little bit helps"


Tristram Devitt

Tristram Devitt

Home Town: Mt Keira

Age: 23

Tristram is the founding staff member and current volunteer for the not-for-proft organisation Its Time Foundation. The foundation installs solar energy systems at schools in the remote pacific island communities. Since 2007, Tristram has been a representative for the Surfrider Foundation Australia within the Wollongong and South Coast Region. Along with this, he has spent the last year being a volunteer guide at Futureworld Eco-Technology Centre educating students about renewable energy and more recently enjoyed volunteering with the Cancer Council before being offered a full-time position.

"Young men are extremely valuable to their local community.  I think Illawarras Best Catch is a great way to promote volunteering and encourage young guys to get involved in community work and really enjoy themselves at the same time"
